Food Blog Horror Anthology

Necroyummycon

Deadline: Dec 31st, 2023 Payment: $25, after acceptance

Theme: Horror stories in the form of food blogs, including recipes

You know how when you look up a recipe online there is a quirky story first about the creator’s childhood in rural Vermont and how it led to their making the best meatloaf ever? What if that story wasn’t uplifting, but a nightmare?

Vamptasy is pleased to announce plans for a new horror anthology with stories in the style of food blogs. Horror author and journalist Jef Rouner (Stranger Words, The Rook Circle) will edit the anthology alongside Brooke Kyle.

We’re looking for tales about how a birthday cake helped you make it through a zombie apocalypse, the chicken casserole that accidentally summoned a demon, or the bowl of ramen that comforted you after you fought off a chainsaw-wielding slasher.

To fit the theme, stories must adhere to a strict set of criteria:

  • Length: 3,000 – 8,000 words.
  • All stories must include a recipe, which will also be the title of the story (ex. “Blackout Cake,” “Vegetable Cheese Soup.” Include the recipe at the end of the story—not in the text. You may describe the preparation in the text.
  • Stories must be in First-Person. They should read like personal blogs informing readers why you love this recipe with a horror theme.
  • Please submit in Shunn Format.

All payments will be made after official acceptance and when acceptance is communicated. Each author will need to send a short bio.

Vamptasy requests two-year non-exclusive rights. This means we will use your story in this anthology, and we can print excerpts of it online and otherwise (for promotional purposes, etc), but in two years you are free to republish it elsewhere.

Submission Period is open now. The deadline to turn in stories is December 31st, 2023, and our intent is to have the book printed and available by early 2024.

(For more information on U.S. copyright law for recipes, visit start here.) You will need to write your own instructions. Please use U.S. measurements such as cups, pounds, and degrees Fahrenheit.
